Hi everyone! Did you know that today on this Earth, 61 million children of primary school age wake up without a school to attend? There are more than 770 million illiterate people and over 300 million children who are not enrolled in school. Ninety-eight percent of these children live in Asia or sub-Saharan Africa. Room to Read is working hard to change this.
I am going to help them! My name is Tim Young, a comedian and nomadic traveler, and I've decided to make this year an exercise in giving. I've made a personal commitment that for every club, college, cruise or corporate gig I do in the next 12 months, I will donate $250 to Room to Read.
I traveled to Nepal a few years ago to see Room to Readís work for myself. I was impressed with the entire organization and I fell in love with Nepal and its lighthearted people, especially the children. So many of them are condemned to the darkness of illiteracy.
My goal is to raise $35,000 for Room to Read to build a school in Nepal, and for that I need your help. I'd like to challenge you to make a tax-deductible donation of $250 (I'll be doing this many times, but Iím asking you to donate once. Of course, any donation is welcome, and your amount can be hidden, but for such an ambitious goal, I'm hoping you will accept my challenge and match me:)
Room to Read offers something unique in that we can actually follow this money and see this school built. I am going to personally travel to Nepal (you are invited!), and hug this building. I'll also meet the students, parents, and teachers that it will serve for many years, and I'll bring back their smiles and gratitude in pictures and video for you. How's that for a return on your investment?
If you are a parent, may I suggest you make the donation in your child's name? I think it plants a wonderful seed in the child's mind, and will continue to grow and engage them in the world for years to come.
Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, once wrote, "Never suppress a generous impulse." I hope many of you are having that impulse right now, as I did when this idea came to me, and I hope you honor it by joining me on this adventure.
Blessings and Namaste,
